Eroski has decided to reverse a policy established in 1992, and pull out of the French market. According to Group spokespersons, the distribution co-op´s investments north of the Pyrenees have long ceased to be strategic.
Only a few years ago, (now former) Eroski Chairman Constan Dacosta noted that the Spanish co-op, based in Elorrio (Vizcaya), had decided to enter the French market more as a learning opportunity than as a business venture. “A mature market like France can teach us a great deal about the distribution business”. Thus, the purpose was knowledge acquisition, for later application to expanding its operations in Spain.

Dia Joins IBEX 35

Founded in 1979 as an affiliate of Carrefour Group, the Dia supermarket chain (Distribuidora Internacional de Alimentos), went public last July. It has since earned a place on the IBEX 35 stock exchange, based on the merits of own equity and liquidity.
Owing to recent events affecting short term trades, the IBEX 35 Technical Advisory Committee has yet to determine which of the 35 incumbents will leave the index to make way for Dia, due to which IBEX 35 listings will temporarily expand to include 36 companies, one beyond the signature limit of 35.
Inclusion in this selective index marks a milestone for Dia that puts it on the radar of a much broader investment base, highly significant for a stock whose free float exceeds 80%.
